(1) comfrey crown cutting - Russian Bocking-14
Comfrey is one of the most valuable plants we have on the farm and in our home gardens. It comes up faithfully year after year, providing ground cover under trees and shading the soil from the hot summer sun.
Crown cuttings are the most viable type of comfrey cutting.
Benefits of comfrey:
Early pollen source for bees and other pollinators, attracting masses of them with adorable purple blooms
Grows large in all types of soil, filling pesky spots in the garden that seem to grow nothing else
Comfrey is a nutrient accumulator β with its deep taproots, comfrey sucks nutrients and minerals from deep within the earth. When leaves are chopped down, they can be used as a nutrient-rich mulch for dahlias, ornamental flowers and edible plants.
how to grow comfrey from a crown cutting:
Crown cuttings can be planted directly into moist ground soil -OR- plant in a pot with potting soil to get it rooted before planting into the ground (recommended method)
Plant in full to part sun (part sun plants will be less bushy but will still grow)
Once established, comfrey does not need water nor fertilizer
Leaves grow rapidly starting in spring. Once they are fully grown, we chop the leaves down (mid-Summer) and add leaves to the garden for a nutrient-rich mulch. Comfrey will grow another whole set of leaves.
You will receive Russian Bocking-14 variety, which is NOT invasive. This type of comfrey does not reproduce via seed, only root cuttings.
